Sichuan Opera facial mask (脸谱, lianpu in Chinese) refers to the various patterns on the faces of the stage performers, indicating different personalities and characters of the roles, as well as to express moral judgment and appraisal of these characters. For example, the blue and green colors indicate a relatively ruthless, avaricious, brave and fierce character.

Blue and green: for a relatively ruthless, avaricious, brave and fierce character, e.g. Shan Xiongxin (581－621), a military general of the Rebel Legion during the end of Sui Dynasty.

Black: for righteous characters, e.g. Zhang Fei (died 221), a military general of the Shu-han State during the Three Kingdoms period (220-280).

White: for evil and arrogant characters, e.g. Cao Cao (155 –220), a warlord of the Eastern Han Dynasty and one of the central figures of the Three Kingdoms period.

Red: for loyal and hot-temper characters, e.g. Guan Yu, a general of the Shu-han State during the Three Kingdoms period.
