The 38-meter-tall museum is shaped like an ancient ornamental object "Ruyi" and it is currently the largest professional art gallery in southwest China.
Located in the northwest of the Tianfu Square, the Sichuan Art Museum, together with the Sichuan Science & Technology Museum, Sichuan Provincial Library, Chengdu Museum, Jincheng Art Theater and Tianfu Grand Theater, is a major part of the Tianfu Square Cultural Zone.
The 38-meter-tall museum is shaped like an ancient ornamental object "Ruyi" (an S-shaped object, usually, made of jade, formerly a symbol of good luck). Covering a total floor area of 19,779 square meters, the museum is currently the largest professional art gallery in southwest China.
In the museum, there are 6 exhibition halls of different sizes, including 2 for permanent in-house collections of the museum, which include masterpieces of great ancient and contemporary artists, such as Zheng Banqiao, Dong Qichang, Shi Tao, Zhang Daqian and Qi Baishi, etc., and works of print artists such as Li Huanmin, Li Shaoyan and Lin Jun, etc. The museum is currently housing nearly 8,000 pieces of printmaking.
