On June 29th, the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) revealed that giant pandas Hua Yan and Zhang Meng were expected to be released back to the Sichuan Liziping National Nature Reserve, which is located in Shimian County in Ya’an.
This will be the world’s first attempt to send two pandas back to the wild in summer.
The two captive-bred pandas had got a two-year re-wilding training session in the Wolong Hetaoping Wild Training Base, during which they, together with their mothers, quickly grasped skills of survival in a semi-wild environment. They now can forage for food, seek sources of water on their own, and avoid predators in the wild.
