Italian Merchant Strives to Promote Italian Wine Culture

Authors: Li Gen

The just concluded 98th National Food and Drinks Fair in Chengdu saw the presence of 11 Italian firms, including Vito Wine Limited Liability International Trading Company, a Chengdu-based firm founded by a successful Italian businessman Vito Lo Castro.
Once in charge of Telecom Italia's Beijing branch for more than ten years, Mr. Castro is from Sicily, Italy. "China is my second hometown. I love China and its people. I hope to make authentic Italian wine available to all Chinese friends," he said.
Mr. Castro started his own business in Chengdu four years ago after retiring from his post in Beijing. "Why did you choose Chengdu to start your own family wine business?" He answered, "Because it's a livable city with unique food culture and fine weather. I was greatly impressed by it when I first came here in 1997. Having been growing rapidly over the recent years, Chengdu is a huge market for top-quality Italian wines. It's a wonderful city for doing business."
Five generations of Mr. Castro's family have been engaged in wine business. The wines his company sells are all from the chateau of his family in Sicily. According to him, the Italian people have been making wines for over one thousand years. Those produced in Sicily Island are unique and premium due to the superb climate and geographical conditions there. "Good food deserves good wines. Healthy and pure, the organic wine from Sicily is a great match for Sichuan-style food." Mr. Castro hopes to further the food cultural exchange between China and Italy through the wines from Sicily and the Italian wine culture.
