Dutch Ambassador to China: Chengdu is China’s Gateway City for Int’l Exchange with Europe

Authors: Go Chengdu

The 2018 Chengdu•Europe Culture Season, a cultural event aimed to let local people experience authentic European culture, kicked off October 9 here in the city. Mr. Ed Kronenburg, Dutch Ambassador to China who attended the opening ceremony on the day, shared what he had gained from the trip and what he expected from the future cultural exchange between the Netherlands and Chengdu.
Mr. Ed Kronenburg, Dutch Ambassador to China
What do you think of the event?
Mr. Kronenburg: Chengdu has become one of the gateway cities in China for the Sino-Dutch economic and cultural ties. Its importance is obvious. I'm glad that we can hold such event to promote and exchange both European and Chengdu cultures. And the relationship between both sides is not limited to economic cooperation, and has been expanding in the cultural fields. Only cultural exchanges can bind the two sides together for long and more closely.
Is this your first visit to Chengdu? What are you going to do during your stay in the city? And have you found some potential cooperative projects between Chengdu and the Netherlands?
Mr. Kronenburg: I made my first visit to Chengdu in March, which gave me a better understanding of the latest development of the Dutch companies in the city. This time I will visit some Chengdu companies to explore the possibilities of mutual cooperation. The Spring Garden Wonderland in Pidu District impresses me so much, and it has established a partnership with its Dutch counterpart involving the breeding and exhibition of flowers and trees. They are planning for a long-term cooperation in industries related to cultural creativity, tourism and health care, etc.
In the future, what cooperation will the Netherlands launch in China? And will there be any possibility for some of them to be done in Chengdu?
Mr. Kronenburg: Currently, the Netherlands and China are working together on training and exchange programs focusing on museum operations, and I hope to bring such ofthem to Chengdu. Meanwhile, I look forward to seeing more mutual communications on rural tourism and environmental protection between my home country and the city, which is rich in tourist resources.
