British ambassador to China Barbara Janet Woodward paid a visit to the city on November 19th-20th.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the all-round strategic partnership between China and the United Kingdom.
British ambassador to China Barbara Janet Woodward, coming on the heels of George Osborne, British Chancellor of the Exchequer, who visited the city of Chengdu in late September of this year, paid a visit to the city on November 19th-20th, in hopes of furthering exchanges and cooperation with Sichuan, in particular, Chengdu, in the fields of public health, bioscience, clean energy, climate change, culture and education.
On November 19th, Ms. Barbara Janet Woodward delivered a speech themed a new era in UK-China relations where the two countries will work together for a green and low-carbon future at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in Chengdu.
Climate change is both a challenge and an opportunity facing the world to promote sustainable development, said Ms. Woodward. She hoped that China and UK could cooperate in new energy, and carbon capture and storage, so as to make contributions to the two countries in low-carbon economic transition, and to the world in realizing respective goals of coping with the global climate change.
During her stay in Chengdu, Ms. Woodward also visited the geriatrics and remote medical treatment departments of the West China Hospital, Sichuan University, to have a better understanding of the hospital’s achievements in the medical research. She expressed the hope that medical institutions in the UK and Sichuan could improve cooperation in the fields of educational training, medical information technology, remote medical treatment and geriatrics.
As the first female British ambassador to China, Ms. Woodward shows great concern for women’s growth and development. She attended a forum on career development co-organized by the Chengdu Municipal Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office and British Consulate General in Chongqing, and shared her experiences with all guests, encouraging female university students to pursue their future career confidently.
