First World Taijiquan Championship Staged in Chengdu

The 1st World Taijiquan Championships, the highest level of its kind in the world, was staged at Dujiangyan Feilong Gymnasium from November 1 to November 4.
During the four-day event, 297 Taijiquan masters from 31 countries or regions all over the world took part in 23 individual events.
“It's unsurprising that the Taichi is so popular in Chengdu,”said Yu Zaiqing, Vice-president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and President of International Wushu Federation (IWF), in an interview with Chengdu Daily in Chengdu on November 1.
In the interview, Mr.Yu highly spoke of the development of Tai Chi exercise in Chengdu, and expressed that IWF will continue to support the development of the Tai Chi culture here.
“Chengdu deserves the title “City of Taichi” due to its sound development and enormous influence,” said Mr. Yu, “over 2 million people in Chengdu have jointed in the Tai Chi exercise according to latest statistics, and the number of participants is expected to reach 2,6 million within the year.”
In Mr.Yu’s view, the Chengdu government attaches great importance to promote the Tai Chi exercise. The first World Taijiquan Championship held in the city will offer unique experience to the local people and well impress the competitors from home and abroad.
"As far as I know, this year’s event attracts about 80% of the world’s Tai Chi masters across the globe, which makes the event such one at the highest level of its kind in the world,” he added.
