The 2015 Summer Program for Civil Servants from Chengdu’s Sister Cities, sponsored by the Chengdu Municipal Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, was launched in Chengdu on July 20 and will run till July 29.
On July 21, a party of 28 civil servants from 19 countries worldwide attended the opening ceremony for the program at Chengdu International Sister Cities Exhibition Hall. Officials from Chengdu Municipal Government and Chengdu Municipal Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office gave the guests detailed introductions about Chengdu’s economic and social development and expanding exchanges and cooperation between the city and its sister cities. During the 10-day event, the party will explore Chengdu’s local culture and civilization, visit famous natural and cultural attractions, and industrial development parks, experience local people’s life, and communicate face to face with local departments.
“Chengdu is a city with profound culture and a long history. I’m looking forward to visiting the Jinsha Site Museum to know more about the city,” said Mr. Svjatoslav Munoz, Director of International Relations and Sister Cities Officer of Municipality of Zapopan, Mexico.
Ms. Victoria Volchenko, an international relations official from Volgograd, Russia, can speak fluent Chinese and has a good knowledge of the Chinese culture. She said that she fell in love with Chengdu when she first came to the city three years ago. This year’s program is a good opportunity for her to have a better understanding of Chengdu’s development in all aspects.
Last year, Lahore established a sister-city tie with Chengdu. Mr. Mahmood Masood Tamana, Executive District Officer of the Municipality of Lahore, expressed that he had found out some similarities between Chengdu and Lahore. Both cities have a long history and focus on balanced economic and social growth, as well as on sustainable urban planning. He hoped to probe deeply into concepts of urban planning with his counterparts of Chengdu, a city of traditions, modernity, creativity and innovations.
On the afternoon of the day, the party took part in a media program with website www.gochengdu.cn, the English-Chinese city portal of Chengdu.
A special, big map with all the sister cities on the website attracted the attention of the party members, each of whom connected his or her home city with Chengdu using a colorful thread on the map. “Maputo is far away from Chengdu. It’s so exciting to see my city on the map,” said Mr. Chadreque Massingue, a technician from the International Relation Department of Maputo City Council, Mozambique.
The Secretary General of Municipality of Haifa Ms. Brancha Sela spoke highly of the website. She said that it is a high-level, unique and comprehensive city portal. Mr. Geert Regelburgge, Policy Officer of Province of Flemish Brabant, showed a great interest in and asked lots of questions about the operation and design of the website.
During the program, most of the guests registered on the website and became members of the site.
They also visited the Chengdu Urban Planning Hall and Chengdu Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone that day, to have all-round information on the city’s general urban and rural planning and development of Chengdu’s hi-tech industries.
An official from the Chengdu Municipal Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office revealed that the foreign guests will have tours to famous local cultural and natural attractions including Jinsha Site Museum, Wuhou Shrine Museum and Du Fu’s Thatched Cottage, and the Qingbaijiang Logistics Park, Sino-Germany (Pujiang) SME Cooperation Park and EU Project Innovation Center (Chengdu) to fully understand the city’s growth in the logistics industry and international cooperation.
