The Chengdu-San Francisco nonstop flight was put into service on June 11.
The direct flight is the first one between the United States and central and western China.
Chengdu’s international air routes increased to 74 after the direct flight put into service.
The service is currently operated by Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.
The flight takes 14 hours, at least 6 hours shorter than before.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft operated by the United Airlines (UA) fly three times a week. The flights are scheduled to depart from Chengdu on every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and arrive in San Francisco the following day. Taking nearly 14 hours of flying time, the direct connection is the first one between the United States and central and western China, and Chengdu has thus become the third city in the Chinese mainland to open flight to the US after Beijing and Shanghai.
According to the UA, the flight provides passengers with Sichuan spicy food and Chinese-language services. To celebrate the maiden flight, UA’s inflight magazine Hemispheres devoted a 10-page story to describing the tasty food, and Chengdu’s brilliant culture and abundant tourist resources.
Mr. Jake Cefolia shows the UA’s inflight magazine Hemispheres, which devoted a 10-page story to describing Chengdu.
“The new route not only shortens the distance between Chengdu and San Francisco, but also is a gateway to North America and Latin America from Chengdu. I believe that the route will bring far-reaching impact on the ties between China and the US in the areas of transportation, culture and trade,” said Jake Cefolia, UA’s vice president of Atlantic and Pacific Sales at the inaugural ceremony for the service at the Chengdu Shuangliu Internation Airport.
A relevant official from the Chengdu Municipal Logistics Office said that Chengdu has so far opened 230 passenger and cargo air routes, including 74 international (regional) ones covering major cities in Europe, the US and Australia-Asia region. In 2015, much more international flight routes will be put into operation, which will solidify the city's status as China's fourth aviation city.
