"Chengdu is a city programmed to be life-friendly, and it has maintained serenity and an elegance throughout its development," said Li Honggu, chief editor of Sanlian Lifeweek Magazine, who added that he believed Chengdu is a creativity-friendly place.
Li said that China was a calm and graceful city in history and has retained China's cultural genes. Therefore, when the magazine started the selection for the City for Humanity Awards 2020, Chengdu was the first place that crossed his mind.

The award ceremony for the City for Humanity Awards 2020, part of the City for Humanity Forum 2020, was held on April 8 in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province. The West Village Yard from Chengdu won the public space award, and the "Chengdu Declaration" was also released at the forum.
In recent years, Li has visited Chengdu more frequently. In his view, the biggest change in the city is the improvement of the consciousness for initiative– a kind of powerful self-confidence that has allowed Chengdu to promote its own comfortable and leisurely attributes.

Zhou Rong, an associate professor of the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University and the judge of the City for Humanity Awards 2020, said the development of a city is not just about the expansion of space, but also the provision of places that nurture humanistic life.
"Chengdu has an agreeable cultural atmosphere, and there are many young architects and artists," he said, adding that he has noticed many interesting spaces in Chengdu that were created by local designers.
Zhou believes that the humanistic charm of Chengdu lies not only in its laid-back and leisurely lifestyle but also in the friendliness and kindness of Chengdu's people, which he thinks are at the heart of the city's appeal.
