The Spring Festival, also called the Chinese New Year, is the most important festival in China. The Spring Festival of this year falls on February 16 (Friday), and reading the tips below would help you enjoy the week-long holiday in Chengdu.
Date Check
The official holiday of the Spring Festival of this year starts on Feb.15 (New Year's Eve) and lasts till Feb.21. There will be a lot of animating and interesting events in Chengdu during the holiday and will have information updated on the festival events in the days to come.
Most shopping malls and chain stores will stay open, though with shortened hours.
Most small shops in Chengdu will stop business for at least several days during the holidays, but almost all the top brand malls (Chengdu IFS, Chengdu Joy City, etc.) and major chain stores (Hongqi, Family Mart, etc.) will stay open.
The Spring Festival is a time for families to get together, and people are expected to be home to celebrate the festival with their families.
The New Year's Eve dinner is called "reunion dinner", and is believed to be the most important meal of the year. Big families of several generations sit around the table and enjoy the food together. Dishes with lucky meanings must be included in the dinner, such as fish, dumplings, and spring rolls.
Many large restaurants will open on the New Year's Eve, but make sure you have made reservations since nowadays more and more local families choose to go out for festival dinners.

The good news is that most of the restaurants at luxury hotels such as Hilton Chengdu, Fairmont Chengdu, Kempinski Hotel Chengdu and Shangri-La Hotel Chengdu will carry on business throughout the holiday.
Festive Events
A plethora of activities related to the Spring Festival covering art, culture, film etc., will be held during the holiday and last for about one month.
The Chengdu Grand Temple Fair and International Panda Lantern Show will be rewarding experiences to learn about local folk culture! You'll also enjoy various local snacks, products, and handicrafts works.
This year, the Chengdu Temple Fair in Wuhou Shrine Museum and 2018 Chengdu Jinsha Culture Festival will be held from Feb.13 to March 4, and the 9th Du Fu Culture Festival will be held from Feb.11 to March 4. The 50th Chengdu International Panda Lanterns Show will start on Feb.10 and last till March 10 at Qicai Tianye Scenic Spot in east suburban Chengdu.
Most bars in Chengdu will open during the holidays.
Travel Plan
Also a good news that you will have easier traffic as the city have the ebbed population and deserted streets during the Spring Festival holidays, which gives you a very good opportunity travel around.
Almost all tourist attractions in and around the city, including parks, historical sites, museums and so on, will open during the holidays and it's a good time for you to visit the usually crowded places, such as Wide & Narrow Alleys, Du Fu's Thatched Cottage Museum, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and Wuhou Shrine Museum.

Folk cultural activities

Grand Temple Fair Chengdu’s annual Grand Temple Fair is held every year during the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) in Wuhou Shrine, Jinli, the Culture Park, and several other city parks. The 15-day-long festival showcases both traditional Sichuan folk art and modern fashions of the city.
