Green Tea and Green Food from the Green Fields

Exploring Spicy Food-A Gastronomic Journey in Chengdu came to its second stop in Pujiang County in southern Chengdu on Feb. 29 and 10 foreigners living in Chengdu, with the staff from gochengdu.cn, had a very special experience of tea making and local food tasting.

The first program of the tour was watching the tea ritual and the process of making tea ― fresh tea of perfect quality, just picked from the tea fields before the Purity and Clearness Festival in mid spring. Pujiang County is known for its production of some of the best green tea in the country. Participants took delight in picking tea in the fields on the rolling hills.

"We usually drink black tea back in England," said Helena Bates Treloar, a member of journey, "And the green tea from here tastes really great! I think I must buy some to have my family have a different taste."

Lunch for the day made a pleasant impression on the members after the tiring job in the tea field, when they had the dishes made with green food ― the true feeling of the season in local areas ― such as dishes with bamboo shoot, free ranch chicken, tender tofu and tea-flavored baozi.

They also had a lot of fun in clay modeling and batik dyeing in the afternoon, with enthusiasm in the colorful folklore arts and handicraft.

The tour of the day left Karl Barkley, from the US, a bit sad when it came to an end. "I'll soon go back to America," he said, "I'll miss all the tasty dishes in Chengdu and I hope I can come back soon."
